There’s a huge gap between what frameworks say and what companies do. McKinsey’s 2025 survey found that 55% of Fortune 500 companies have AI ethics boards. Sounds impressive-until you dig deeper. The field is shifting. The Partnership on AI’s 2025 Index shows 67% of organizations are moving beyond “ethics washing” to measurable outcomes. ISO is finalizing ISO/IEC 42001, the first global standard for AI management systems, expected by Q3 2026. That’s a big deal. It means audits will be standardized.

NIST’s Generative AI Risk Management Framework (GRMF), released in February 2025, gives technical specs for measuring foundation model risks. It’s not a policy. It’s a toolkit. And it’s free.

But here’s the truth: frameworks won’t save us. People will. A team that asks hard questions. A leader who listens. A culture that punishes shortcuts.

Generative AI is here to stay. The question isn’t whether we can control it. It’s whether we’re brave enough to hold ourselves accountable.
